Since 2011, I have been a Humanties Scholar, listed with the Vermont Humanities Council Speaker’s Bureau. I have offered two lectures through them, “Alfred Hitchcock and the Art of Suspense” and “Classic films of the 1950s.” These lectures, illustrated with short film clips, have taken me to many towns in Vermont, from Fairfield to Arlington. I also have illustrated talks on “Classic Films of HolIywood’s Golden Age,” “The French New Wave,” “Movies About Movies,” “Four approaches to Jewish identity in film: Woody Allen, Paul Mazursky, Sidney Lumet and Mel Brooks,”and “Four Influential Directors: Bergman, Fellini, Kurosawa, and Truffaut.” I have also lectured on specific classic films for several years and for several different groups, including: “Casablanca” for the Rutland Free Library; “Out of the Past” for Johnson State College; “To Kill a Mockingbird” for the Vermont Humanities Council; “Paths of Glory” for the Vermont College of Fine Arts Film Program; and on many other films for the Osher Lifelong Learning Institute (OLLI), the Jaquith Public Library (Marshfield), the Kellogg-Hubbard Library (Montpelier), the Chandler Film Society (Randolph).
